Characters and Symbols:
Character: Prometheus with Jesus:
- Both Prometheus and Jesus are regarded as being the saviors of mankind. Jesus came down to the people on the Earth and brought them salvation, in a sense “saving” the humans and is eventually killed for saying that people will be saved. In the story of Prometheus, Prometheus comes down to the humans and gives them a vital tool for survival, fire, and is eventually killed for it. Prometheus loved the humans so much that he was willing to die, just like Jesus.
Character: Prometheus with God:
- Prometheus can also be compared to God as both control the humans. Prometheus created the humans from mud and earth and unconditionally loved them, just like God. Prometheus loved the humans even more than the fellow Olympic Gods, that he decided to allow humans to walk on two legs like the gods. When Zeus was angered by Prometheus, he created Pandora, who was a human who although was extremely beautiful, had a black heart and a lying mouth with a jar that was forbidden for her to open, which she opened anyways. This is relatable to the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with the forbidden fruit as they were instructed by God not to eat the fruit yet did anyways.
Symbolism: Prometheus as the fire, Jesus as the light:
- Prometheus is symbolic to Jesus as both represent light. Prometheus literally represents light as he brings fire back to the humans which lights up in real life, and is a vital tool to them and because of that is considered the bearer of light. Jesus represents light as when he comes to Earth, he brings salvation for the humans, and since light is associated with holiness and goodness, he is the “light" to the humans, and can also be seen as a bearer of light as he brings it to them.
Symbolism: The punishment for sin:
- As the punishment of Adam and Eve eating from the forbidden fruit was carried out by God in the Bible, the punishment for Prometheus bringing fire to the humans was carried out by Zeus. Not only did the punishment of Prometheus affect himself, but it affected the community around him as Zeus created Pandora, the first human made by the gods whom had a box full of evil, and although she was told not to open the box, she opened it always releasing all of the evils on the Earth, giving an explanation to why humans aren’t perfect and why major atrocities exist. This is just like Adam and Eve, as they were instructed not to eat the forbidden fruit, and since they did, they fell from heaven to the Earth, and with them carried the sin, which is an explanation for all of the evil.
